We’ll start clearing upgrades at the gate ten minutes earlier than before, to allow more opportunity to secure an upgraded seat before you board. We recently surveyed our Medallion Members about our companion policy for Complimentary Upgrades, and a majority of you voted that Medallion Members traveling with a companion should clear for Complimentary Upgrades based on the higher of the two Status Tiers.
So, we’ve invested in making things better.
Starting October 13, 2016, Medallion Members traveling with one companion will clear for Complimentary Upgrades to both First Class and Delta Comfort+® based on the status of the higher-tiered Member, as long as the companion is a SkyMiles Member, Medallion Member or partner airline elite member, traveling in the same reservation (revenue tickets only). Diamond and General Member traveling together? Your upgrade will clear at the Diamond Tier, when available.
It’s one of the many ways we’re striving to offer the best elite travel experience for our most loyal Members.

For flights departing on or after April 30, 2016, we have simplified the clearance priority for Complimentary Upgrades as we strive to offer the best elite travel experience for our members. This new upgrade priority better recognizes the loyalty of our Medallion members, SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express Card Members and Delta Corporate Travelers. Delta Corporate Travelers include passengers traveling on a ticket that includes their eligible employer’s Corporate Ticket Designator.
Upgrade priority:
- Medallion level is the most important factor in upgrade clearance priority, starting with Diamond Medallion members, then Platinum, Gold and Silver.
- Members at the same Medallion level will be cleared in order of fare class families for revenue tickets, Award Tickets and Pay with Miles1 tickets, with higher fare classes among all ticket types holding higher priority.
- Partner airline elite members and SPG® Platinum Preferred members will be eligible for day-of-departure upgrades only.
- Y class fares will no longer be upgraded at booking.
Rewarding your loyalty:
- Delta Reserve Credit Card Members will still have a higher prioritization within their Medallion group for upgrades.2
- Delta Corporate Travelers3 will now have a higher prioritization within their Medallion group for upgrades.
- If all else is equal, Card Members who earned the Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) Waiver by spending at least $25,000 in the current calendar year on their Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express will enjoy higher priority.
- Date and time of upgrade request will be used as a tie-breaker.
Learn more about Complimentary Upgrades.
1All Pay with Miles terms and conditions apply. To review the rules, visit Pay with Miles.
2Upgrade Priority within the same Medallion tier and fare class family is applicable only to Basic Card Members.
3To be eligible for the Corporate Upgrade benefit, Corporate Travelers must be SkyMiles Medallion members and traveling on a ticket that includes their employer’s eligible Corporate Ticket Designator.

Traveling with our partner airlines is becoming even more rewarding next year. The way you earn miles when flying with our partners will be simpler, and Members will be able to earn Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs – U.S.-based Members only) for travel on 24 partner airlines beginning January 1, 2018.
What SkyMiles Members need to know:
- Members will earn MQMs, MQSs and MQDs on more partner-marketed flights
- How to know if a flight is Delta-marketed or partner-marketed? Look at the two-letter airline code in the flight number of your ticket. For example, DL 8517 is a Delta-marketed flight and AF 0074 is an Air-France-marketed flight.
- The way you earn miles when traveling on these partner airlines will be determined exclusively based on the marketing carrier of a flight, which means that Members will only need to know their flight number to determine how they’ll earn miles:
- Delta-marketed flights (for example DL 8517) earn miles based on dollars spent
- Partner-marketed flights (for example AF 0074) earn miles based on distance flown
- Members may earn up to 200% in bonus miles, in addition to Medallion Tier bonuses, on premium fare classes when booking partner-marketed flights with:
- Air France
- KLM
- Virgin Atlantic
- Alitalia
- China Eastern
- Virgin Australia
- Aeromexico
- GOL
- For all other partners, Members will earn 100% of the distance flown for all First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Full Fare Economy fares.
- If Members have already booked a partner-marketed flight for travel on or after January 1, 2018 under the current earning rules, they may use the Request Mileage Credit form or contact Delta Reservations after completing their travel to request a mileage credit adjustment. Only tickets booked on or before October 26, 2017 will be considered for adjustment.
For full details on these changes, including eligible fare classes and specific bonus levels for each applicable partner airline, please visit Partner Airlinesopens in a new window and select the airline you wish to learn more about.
- Members will earn MQMs, MQSs and MQDs on more partner-marketed flights

- The operating carrier for a flight indicates which airline flies the plane. For example, an Aeromexico-operated flight means the flight will be on Aeromexico aircraft.
2Short-haul flights operated by Aeromexico include intra-Mexico flights, and flights between Mexico and the United States, Canada, Central America, Caribbean, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
